Zumobi Launches Widgety Mobile Web Interface

"What I do like more than anything is the concept of tiles and/or widgets," said JupiterResearch wireless analyst Neil Strother. "What they are onto here is a sort of an organized widget universe and that has some power on the mobile phone. "They tend to be fairly small yet powerful little applications that the user can click on."

Free Report from Keynote Systems 2007 Trends and Observations of the Mobile and Connected World examines how technologies, from the Web to the mobile phone, are specifically impacting key vertical industries, from financial services to new media. Download yours here.

BSU, Oregon game named one of 2008's best

Do you remember? I don't, because they last did so six years prior to my existence. Georgia lost 10-3 at Southern Cal on Oct. 7, 1960. The Dawgs picked an excellent time to play a Musberger-worthy contest, as Mark Richt's club will be a preseason No. 1 in many mags. Knowshon Moreno, only a sophomore, is the goods. Rudy Carpenter returns at QB for the Sun Devils, Pac-10 runners-up in '07.

2. Ohio State at Southern Cal -- Sept. 13

Here's an early-season battle between a pair of perennial top 5's, one of whom has played in the national championship game five of the past six seasons. Buckeye All-American defensive end Vernon Gholston has declared for the NFL draft, but All-American linebacker mate James Laurinaitis will return. So will Alex Boone, all 6-8, 325 of him, at offensive tackle for the Buckeyes.

Much ado about next to nothing

She walked well off the roadway with her back to the traffic yet seemed to ignore it in her steadfast stride. She swayed occasionally in the wind wash of big trucks and started reflexively at the ominous sounds of sirens or horns or the screeching of tires, yet continued without pause as she had done for years. She remembered things while she walked. She remembered loves and losses, remembered children and injuries, remembered friends and families, but they seemed long ago. She didnt remember it being so cold. Many of the car drivers were familiar with her Sunday routine and took appropriate care when nearing her. Some slowed to offer a ride but she always refused politely. She always blessed them. She continued in this manner for almost two hours, sometimes longer depending on weather or road construction, until she reached the entrance to the parking lot of the hospital.

NIH Announces Public-Access Policy

NIH's brief notice on its grants Web site simply says that its existing public-access policy is now mandatory for all articles accepted on or after 7 April. Making sure that submissions comply with the journals' copyright policy is up to investigators and their institutions. The policy applies only to peer-reviewed research and reviews, not editorials or book chapters, NIH says.

To motivate scientists, NIH will require that investigators include the PubMed Central or NIH submission number for all applicable papers referenced in their grant applications and progress reports. Other possible ways of enforcing the policy include a call from an NIH program director and suspension of funds, says NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research Norka Ruiz Bravo. "We hope we're not going to get there," she says.

Rams say VP Softli’s not out — at least not yet

GLENDALE, ARIZ. - Rumors of Tony Softli's demise with the Rams have swirled for weeks. But they intensified Sunday with Internet reports that he would be out as the Rams' vice president of player personnel after just two seasons on the job in St. Louis.

"He's not out," said Jay Zygmunt, Rams president of football operations-general manager, shortly after the team's 48-19 loss Sunday to Arizona. "I don't know what else to say. He's continuing to prepare for the draft, as usual."

But Zygmunt added that all aspects of the team and the organization would be evaluated in the coming week as the Rams contemplate what changes to make in the wake of a 3-13 season.

Softli normally attends all Rams games, but he was not seen Sunday and could not be reached for comment.

While parents sort the pieces, UW researchers hunt for connections

We'll walk a strange fine line tomorrow. My wife, Nina, his 7-year-old sister, Nicole, and I will try to show him it's a special day and give him a taste of what other kids get, but it has to be done just right. Too much attention is like cranking a stereo's volume on full and could cause him to either shut down or lose control.

Presents are the trickiest part. He has no interest in them and hasn't since he was diagnosed with autism seven years ago. We stopped wrapping because he so hates opening. He would tear a tiny strip, about the length of an index finger. If I egged him on, he'd do an inch more. If I pressed further, his arms and hands would go limp and his eyes would dim and lock onto a corner of the ceiling.

So we won't push it. It's his day, not ours. .

Steve Fossett and Burt Rutan's Ultimate Solo: Behind the Scenes

We couldn't believe it," recalls Karkow, smiling at the memory. "We looked at each other and said, 'This can't be true. We must have left something off.' " But they hadn't. They'd aced the third variable of the Breguet Range Equation.

Karkow, a laconic fellow with a dry sense of humor, immediately sent off an e-mail to Rutan. "We blew the empty weight estimate by over 200 pounds," he reported somberly. The next day, Rutan congratulated the team for being only about 7 percent overweight. Only then did the boss learn that his team had beaten the estimate by 7 percent.
