Xbox is crack for kids

In the dog-end of the Christmas holidays my sons and a friend were re-creating the rolling boulder sequence in Raiders of the Lost Ark by charging up and downstairs pursued by my new purple gym ball. As the crashing reached a climax and Harrison Ford slammed his head into the bannister, I found myself thinking: oh, why can't they just sit down nicely and watch TV for a bit?

I soon stamped on this heresy, of course, since children doing vaguely energetic, imaginative things must be celebrated, at whatever cost to the nerves.

These days the mother who parks her kids before the Dave channel in order to work is no better than the one who shoves chips through the school railings to her children or feeds the family dog two-quid unhappy chicken just to hack off Jamie Oliver.

Tetris Splash Review

Tetris has seen so many variations of itself that it can almost be called a template at this point. Its humble beginnings on the Gameboy has spawned a legion of sequels from 3D variations to new games featuring popular mascots. It's no surprise, though, because its simplistic gameplay is both addicting and fun and appeals to the masses like no other game. Tetris Splash literally changes nothing from the original, but adds a soothing aquarium aesthetic and a remixed version of the orginal theme that begs the gamer to simply relax.

If you're looking for new game modes then you'll be disappointed to learn there are only two modes: Marathon and 40 Line. Marathon Mode is the classic Tetris everyone knows and loves. Players keep fitting pieces together trying to keep the blocks from reaching the top of the board.

State agencies feel chill from Jindal’s hiring freeze

State agencies from health care to higher education are seeking relief from Gov. Bobby Jindal’s employee hiring freeze.

"It’s a serious issue for us," said Fred Cerise, who as vice president for the LSU System’s health care and medical education is over the state’s charity hospitals.

LSU hospitals today have 456 vacancies, Cerise said Wednesday.

Commissioner of Higher Education Joseph Savoie, who oversees the state’s vo-tech schools, colleges and universities, complained to Jindal’s money manager about the hiring freeze the governor issued last week.

"It is somewhat ironic that now that funding is available, we may still be restricted in our ability to use those resources in securing the personnel so vital to our mission," Savoie wrote.

Smith: Injured Deng could be out vs. Kings

Bulls forward Luol Deng was scheduled to have an MRI exam on his injured left Achilles late Friday and might not be able to play tonight when the Bulls host the Sacramento Kings.

''I don't know how long [Deng is] out for but I don't think he's going to be ready [Saturday],'' forward Joe Smith said. ''Hopefully, we can all step up as a group and be able to take up some of the slack.''

Anti-Bush Campaign Planned

A liberal advocacy group plans to spend $8.5 million in a drive to make sure President Bush's public approval doesn't improve as his days in the White House come to an end.

Americans United for Change plans to undertake a yearlong campaign, spending the bulk of the money on advertising, to keep public attention on what the group says are the failures of the Bush administration, including the war in Iraq, the response to Hurricane Katrina, and the current mortgage crisis.

In selling the plan to fundraisers, the group has argued that support for President Reagan was at a low of 42 percent in 1987 but climbed to 63 percent before he left office. "All of a sudden he became a rallying cry for conservatives and their ideology," said Brad Woodhouse, president of the group.

New Mexico Gov. Richardson drops out of '08 race

The time has come to end my quest and come home to tackle the challenges before us in New Mexico," Richardson told cheering supporters in his state capital of Santa Fe. "Our legislature starts next week, and I intend to put my full efforts behind our No. 1 priority -- extending health insurance to every New Mexican by the end of my term."

When making his announcement, Richardson declined to endorse any candidate but called the Democratic field "the most promising field in my lifetime." He predicted the party's eventual nominee would win the White House.

While praising each of the remaining contenders, he also urged them to swear off personal attacks against one another. Watch Richardson bow out of the race »

"To do otherwise could result in another four to eight years of more of the same, and that would be the biggest tragedy of all," Richardson said.
