Watchdog for online piracy trains at Orlando university
WASHINGTON (MCT) — The music industry's next weapon against online piracy is being tested at the University of Central Florida — a new front in the battle to stop college students from stealing music and movies. School officials have confirmed that the campus is experimenting with a new watchdog program designed to prevent students from using computers to swap copyright-protected files. Developed at the University of Florida, the "Integrity" program tracks data transfers between computers, searching for code patterns that indicate users are illegally transferring material. Once located, the program automatically tells students they've been caught. Depending on the school, this can lead to a range of punishments, such as a temporary ban from the system.
US Army's computer game recruiting
Anti-recruitment groups are slamming a US Army deal to sponsor a computer war game channel, charging that real war is no game. In June, the Army is set to sponsor a channel at the Global Gaming League website, a popular spot for Internet computer game lovers. "It is part of this campaign for the last 20 years to invade youth culture with militarism," Project on Youth and Non-military Opportunities co-founder Rick Jahnkow told AFP. "It affects the way young people think. It affects their world view. That is a very dangerous thing." A first-person shooter game based on the army training manual will be a centerpiece of the channel, which will feature other games in the same genre. The "America's Army" game was released about five years ago and ranks in the top 10 most popular computer games of its kind, according to McCann World Group vice president Anders Ekman, who is handling the project for the Army.

When the producers of the decidedly retro movie "Kickin' It Old Skool," a flick stuck in the "Me Decade" and due in theaters next week, began gathering icons from the 1980s, they didn't stop at leg warmers and Rubik's Cubes.Related Video - Video - Movie calls local man into actionEventually they got down to the bigger items on their list. That's when the movie's "car wrangler" came looking for Dave Doggett, 47, a "Knight Rider" TV show enthusiast from Bonney Lake. Doggett's replica of the famous talking car from the show, the Knight Industries Two Thousand, or "K.I.T.T.," was relatively close to the Burnaby, B.C., film set. And Doggett wasn't going to gouge them on fees for using his car in scenes with "Knight Rider" star David Hasselhoff.
